UK: Demand for Staff Strengthens to 13-Month High

Job vacancies have grown at their fastest rate for 13 months, with rises reported for both permanent and temporary positions.
This is according to the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) and KPMG’s job data for September, which also found that the rate of growth in appointments of temporary staff was at a 14-month high.

Continued economic issues affect financial services hiring as job opportunities fall 33%
London Employment Monitor June 12 Highlights
- The latest London Employment Monitor registered a 33% decrease in the number of financial services jobs newly available in the market from May 12 to June 12
- Compared to June 11, this was a decrease of 53% in the number of roles coming onto the market
- The number of professionals starting the search for a new position declined by 3% month-on-month
- Compared to the same time last year, this was a 60% drop in the number of people entering the jobs market
- The average salary for those securing new jobs in June 12 dropped by a negligible 1% month-on-month and by 4% from June 11.

Just like the weather – it never rains but it pours when the economy is crying out for positive news.
GDP for Q4 has been revised down from -0.3% to -0.4% and although the Q1 figure remains at -0.3% evidence that government spending helped boost the figure suggests a weaker underlying picture and forecasts for the full year are now trending downwards, perhaps as low as near zero growth since Q2 output will also be affected by the extra Jubilee holiday, despite likely positive spin-offs on consumer confidence and spending.

United Kingdom: Employers ‘more positive on immediate jobs outlook’ – CIPD

The immediate jobs outlook has turned positive for the first time in more than a year, driven largely by a decrease in redundancyintentions. This is the main finding of the latest Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD)’s quarterly Labour Market Outlook survey of more than 1,000 employers.

It has been a great year for tax professionals. Activity levels across all tax specialisms and locations reached record highs, driven by a concerted surge in confidence across all sectors and the desire of candidates at all levels to move jobs.
Sustained confidence in the corporate sector has resulted in a significant number of UK listed companies hiring staff to strengthen their tax functions, principally in compliance and reporting, transfer pricing and VAT. In a number of cases this has resulted in multiple hires.

Research has found that 55% of HR directors believe that social media platforms are an ineffective recruiting tool, or are not sure how effective it is, with only 30% using social media to find candidates. The survey of 200 HR directors found that 63% believe that profiles on sites such as LinkedIn will not replace the traditional CV in the future.
