Australia: Racism rife in finance and IT hiring

ALMOST three-quarters of finance and information technology workers say racism exists in Australian hiring practices, a survey shows.
The survey of 895 workers, which was conducted by Balance Recruitment in December last year, also found that 30 per cent of people in the IT and finance sectors had first-hand experiences of racism.

Australia bypassed the worst of the global financial crisis, which has meant its effect on the Australian Employment Placement Services industry has been mild compared with its international counterparts. Australia’s rise in unemployment was relatively small in 2008-09 and 2009-10, and quickly began to reverse in subsequent years, with demand for employment placement services rebounding strongly in 2010-11, and this is expected to continue in 2011-12.

New Zealand employers are rated higher by their staff than their transtasman counterparts, according to research conducted by recruitment agency.
The findings are part of the Workforce Index, which obtained the views of 97,000 people in 30 countries, including more than 1800 in New Zealand.
